Success Stories
SPAN was contacted by a local senior welfare organization regarding a client from Richardson who had recently been diagnosed with stage four breast cancer, and who had three dogs, a cat, and a fish for which she was the sole caregiver. She was financially unable to pay for veterinary care and her illness had limited her ability to bathe the pets and keep them free from fleas. As a result, her home was infested with fleas, to the degree that home health and cleaning services were no longer able to visit her home and assist her.
Working with an area veterinarian, SPAN was able to financially assist the client in securing veterinary care for the dogs and cat, including updating all of their immunizations, heartworm medication, and flea treatment and preventative. Her home was accordingly cleaned and the pets – now healthy, medically treated, and free of fleas – were able to return home. Home health services were, in turn, able to return to her home to assist her.
Wolfy, a 10-year-old Bichon Frise, was rescued from a shelter, and was previously frightened of almost everything. The owner lives on disability and needed help with much needed tests and medication. SPAN helped Wolfy with his shots, heartworm and flea treatments.
Isaac, a chihuahua, was hospitalized for heartworms. The bill was $450, and the owner was on a limited income. Still, she saved $300 in her Bible towards the bill. SPAN assisted by paying the balance.
Cinnamon, a border collie, is on special food and medication for his diabetic and pancreas problems, and his owner was recently laid off. SPAN helped pay for Cinnamon’s medications.
Aiko, a rescued Japanese Chen with epilepsy, was assisted by SPAN with funds for his medication and vet care.
A 62-year-old owner of a cockatiel begs on street corners and public buses for money to pay for food and shelter. Local agencies have given her some assistance and came to SPAN asking for help with food for her bird. SPAN aided her with a supply of bird seed.
